Nigeria legend Samson Siasia has heavily criticized the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for paying local coaches a fraction of what they pay foreign coaches.

The Super Eagles are looking for a new coach following the departure of Jose Peseiro, who led the nation to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Super Eagles legend, Finidi George, took charge of the team during the March international break and remains one of the candidates to become the team's permanent manager.

Several former Nigeria footballers have backed the appointment of a local coach instead of a foreign coach.

Emmanuel Amunike, Daniel Amokachi, Sylvanus Okpala, Sampson Siasia, Michael Nsien, and Ndubuisi Egbo have been linked with the role.

Siasia's coaching experience came during his stint as the country's youth team coach. He has coached at the Olympics and the World Cup.

He played for the Super Eagles 51 times and was part of the team that won the 1994 AFCON, per Afrik-Foot.

Siasia blasts NFF

Siasia is unhappy with the way the NFF treat local coaches.

“They didn’t give Nigeria people [local coaches] four years, you lose one match they [NFF] fire you. That’s the truth. The white people will come, you give them [more time], [and] you pay them more money,” he said via Soccernet.

Peseiro reportedly signed a $70,000 deal with the federation and led the team for 22 months before leaving when his contract expired. Siasia is exasperated with the disparity in pay between local and foreign coaches.

“They will pay the white man $50,000 monthly, and pay local hires ₦1,000,000. From the million naira, the coaching staff will also take inside, and you also have to feed your family,” he added.

Nigeria face South Africa and Benin in June in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Troost-Ekong wants local coach

Sports Brief earlier reported on Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong weighing in on who should become the nation's next coach.

The 2023 AFCON Player of the TOunanemt says he would love to see a local coach take charge of the team because they understand the Nigerian culture.
