The endless twists surrounding the coaching vacancy of the Super Eagles of Nigeria have left many wondering about the immediate future of Finidi George.

The 52-year-old, who had previously served as assistant coach of the national team for 22 months under the reign of former manager, Jose Peseiro, was recently handed the role as interim head coach of the team, which has since sparked conversations about his potential to take over the role full-time.

However, amid these lingering talks, it was confirmed that the former Real Betis winger would not be handed the job on a permanent basis — a situation which has since sparked discussions about what his future with the national team would be.

Amid this growing talk and concern, a chieftain of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has cleared the air on the future of coach Finidi.

NFF chief speaks on Finidi

In an interview reported by media outlet OwnGoalNigeria, a high-ranking Nigerian football official, who chose to remain anonymous, emphasised that the federation is not considering parting ways with the 52-year-old.

The official stated that whoever eventually is named the team's coach would need to include Finidi among the members of his coaching staff.

The NFF chief also stressed the importance of having Finidi in the next coach's setup, highlighting his role in integrating players and fostering a strong relationship between the new coach and the team. This, they believe, will ensure a certain level of continuity within the national team's ranks.

Nigeria is scheduled to face South Africa in the next round of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series. While it seems confirmed that Finidi will be part of the backroom staff, the identity of the person who will lead the Nigerian team remains a mystery yet to be solved.

NFF excludes Amunike

In another report, Sports Brief stated that the NFF have excluded Emmanuel Amunike from the final shortlist for the Super Eagles coaching vacancy.

The 53-year-old was initially seen as the favourite for the role; however, the latest developments indicate that he is no longer being considered.
