Steve Nicol has suggested that Victor Osimhen would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool and has urged the Reds to sign the Napoli forward as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian has gained iconic status with the Merseysiders since joining from AS Roma in 2017, winning the Premier League title once and the top scorer's award multiple times.

According to Soccernet, Nicol, who featured as a right-back for Liverpool, believes the Egyptian is near his exit at Anfield and wants Liverpool to sign Osimhen as his replacement.

"The fact that Salah is leaving, whether this year or next year, Osimhen? I think he would be fantastic for Liverpool. In the middle of the park, we’ve just signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai; Endo’s turned out to be incredible - you need someone who will run all day and give it to Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, and Salah."

Osimhen has one year left on his Napoli contract and has been widely tipped to leave the reigning Italian champions at the end of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea reportedly keen on signing him.

Arsenal shifting focus from Osimhen

Meanwhile, Arsenal are said to not be willing to pay the huge sum of money to sign Osimhen from Napoli in the summer window as they continue their search to sign a marquee forward.

The Gunners will instead lean towards signing someone like Viktor Gyokeres from Portuguese giants, Sporting Lisbon, who is expected to cost way less than the Super Eagles striker, per Punch NG.

Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in 2020, signed a new contract in December that saw him almost doubling his previous earnings, along with a €130 million release clause in his new contract.

Napoli meets with Osimhen’s replacement

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Jonathan David looks set to join Napoli as his agent is said to have met with the Italian club's incoming Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna in preparation for a potential deal.

The 24-year-old forward has emerged as a front-runner to replace Osimhen at the Serie A champions next season, as the Parthenopei make plans to go on without the reigning African Footballer of the Year.
