Former England and Premier League star Frank Worthington has been confirmed dead after a long illness at the age of 72.

The former forward who was popularly described as 'the working man’s George Best' scored over 260 goals in 828 appearances for all the clubs he represented during his 26-year career

He was said to have won the Football League Second Division title with Huddersfield Town at the end of the 1969–70 season and two years later, he joined Leicester City.

Frank was also capped eight times by the English national team and scored two goals in the process.

Reports claim the former attacker had suffered an unnamed illness for a long period, be was confirmed to have died peacefully on his hospital bed on March 22 according to his family.

The Mirror published a statement confirming the departure of the former football star after his death which reads:

“It is with great sadness that the death is announced of football legend Frank Worthington who passed away last night. Frank died peacefully in hospital in Huddersfield following a long illness."

Meanwhile, his surviving wife Carol while paying tribute to her late husband said:

"Frank brought joy to so many people throughout his career and in his private life. He will be greatly missed by everyone who loved him so much.”

Worthington was one of the greatest players of his generation and his playboy lifestyle - and outlandish sense of dress - made him a favourite with fans. He was said to have played 22 consecutive Football League seasons.

In 14 of those seasons, he played in the top division, notching 150 goals in 466 matches, and won the Golden Boot award in 1978-79 as the leading scorer ahead of Kenny Dalglish and Frank Stapleton.

Legit.ng earlier reported that ex-England international Stephen Jagielka has been reported dead at the age of 43 on Wednesday, March 17.

Steve is the older brother to Sheffield United centre-back Phil Jagielka and his death has dealt a major blow on his former clubs.

Although the cause of his death is yet to be disclosed, tributes have however started trooping in for the late midfielder.
