5 Nigerians with most assists in EPL history

5. Shola Ameobi (Newcastle and Crystal Palace) 20:

The former Nigerian international was known for his goalscoring ability during his time in the Premier League with Newcastle.

In addition to scoring many goals for the Magpies, the striker also added 20 assists to his league record.

4. Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City and Leicester City) 25:

Iheanacho began his Premier League career with Manchester City and continued with Leicester City after leaving the Cityzens in 2017.

The Super Eagles star is fourth on the log for Nigerians with the most assists in Premier League history. He tallied 25 assists and could have added more without the Foxes going down to the Championship in 2023.

3. Yakubu Ayegbeni (Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers) 26:

Yakubu is arguably one of the best African players to grace the English top-flight league due to his performance for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and Everton during his heydays.

He is Nigeria's highest goalscorer in the league's history, and his 26 assists put him third on the list.

2. Kanu Nwankwo (Arsenal, West Brom, and Portsmouth) 29:

Kanu is the most successful Nigerian in history, and his record of 29 assists in the Premier League stood for a couple of years before Iwobi equalled the record on Sunday (April 14).

The former Inter Milan striker achieved the feat while representing Arsenal, West Brom and Portsmouth.

1. Alex Iwobi (Arsenal, Everton, and Fulham) 29:

Iwobi made his Premier League debut with Arsenal as a forward under Arsene Wenger in 2015, but he grew to become one of the best midfielders in Africa after leaving the Gunners in 2019.

The 27-year-old equalled Kanu's record of 29 assists (most by a Nigerian) against West Ham over the weekend and is destined to be the outright owner of the record in future.

Iwobi breaks Mikel Obi's PL record

Sports Brief earlier reported that Iwobi achieved a significant milestone on Sunday, April 8, becoming the Nigerian player to have been fielded for the most minutes in the Premier League.

The Fulham midfielder broke a longstanding record held by former Nigerian international Mikel.
