  • Arsenal's title chances took a blow after the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa
  • Liverpool also lost, allowing Manchester City to go top of the table
  • Jose Mourinho had earlier ruled the Gunners out of the title chase

Arsenal's Premier League title chances appear to have slipped away after the club suffered a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, coached by former boss, Unai Emery, at the Emirates Stadium.

The English league is witnessing a three-horse race for the title between Arsenal, Liverpool, and defending champions Manchester City, making every game until the end of the season a must-win.

At the start of the matchday, the Gunners were at the top of the table with 71 points, tied with Liverpool but with a superior goal difference, while City had 70 points.

Pep Guardiola's men walloped Luton Town 5-1, while Jurgen Klopp's men suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield, changing the scope of the title race.

When Mourinho predicted Premier League winner

Jose Mourinho was a guest on John Obi Mikel's Obi One Podcast in November. He was asked who he thought would win the league title in England, and his answer baffled everyone.

"Man City 51%, Liverpool 49%. Arsenal, nah," he said.

The Special One was slammed for his opinion, mostly by the fans of the North London club, but after their loss to Villa and their chances of slipping away, it looks like the former Chelsea boss will be proven right.

Per Transfermarkt, Mourinho has faced Arsenal 23 times in his managerial career. He won 12 games, drew eight, and lost three. 10 of those wins were against Arsene Wenger.

No team has won it yet, but with Man City's antecedent of not losing the race when they go top of the table and possibly easier fixtures, Guardiola's side could win their fourth consecutive title.

Ferdinand rules Arsenal out of PL race

Sports Brief also reported on Rio Ferdinand ruling Arsenal out of the title race while predicting the outcome of the remaining games for the three teams competing for the league.

The English pundit claimed the away games against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur would cost the Gunners yet unbeknown to him, they will lose at home to Villa.
