  • Chelsea's Lesley Ugochukwu has been sidelined since December
  • The midfielder has missed 12 consecutive Premier League games
  • Mauricio Pochettino confirmed he would return to training by May

Chelsea coach, Mauricio Pochettino, has shed light on the ongoing injury concern surrounding Lesley Ugochukwu.

The French midfielder hasn't played since sustaining an injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day last year.

The 19-year-old had been a valuable team asset before his prolonged hamstring setback, which has seen him miss 12 consecutive Premier League fixtures.

Pochettino has confirmed that Ugochukwu won't be in contention when the Blues welcome Everton to Stamford Bridge on Monday night, April 15. The manager expressed hope that the young midfielder would return to group training by early May, provided no setbacks occur.

"Lesley is doing his recovery. We will see if in a few weeks he can again be part of the training sessions with the first team. But it is day by day that we are assessing these guys," said the Argentine boss, as quoted by Chelsea.

He also hinted that World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez and French defender Alex Disasi could be available as the team seeks to move from 9th in the table and eclipse West Ham and Newcastle.

As reported by the Athletic, Ugochukwu signed a lengthy contract with Chelsea in 2023. He marked his debut against Liverpool earlier that season.

Despite his injury, he recently stirred conversation on social media with a photo from his visit to Nigeria, showcasing his connection to his roots and family.

His injury has impacted his club career and sparked discussions about his international eligibility. While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) eyes him for a potential call-up, his final decision remains uncertain.

Nevertheless, acknowledging his heritage has garnered praise from fans and the football community.

Ugochukwu discloses why he joined Chelsea

Sports Brief reported that Ugochukwu explained the reasons why he joined Chelsea.

He joined the Blues from French Ligue 1 side Rennes for a reported fee of €27million.

His move surprised many, as he had not established himself as a regular starter for the French side.
