  • Gyan retired from football in 2023 after almost two decades

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has named his favourite coach during his time with the national team, the Black Stars.

The retired forward played under several coaches in his 19-year spell with the four-time African champions.

Gyan spent time with Ratomir Djukovic, Milovan Rajevac, and Kwesi Appiah at the three FIFA World Cups he played in, scoring six goals to become Africa's all-time top scorer at the competition.

However, he disclosed the coach that he really enjoyed working with was Frenchman Claude Le Roy.

"We played under many coaches but the coach I felt comfortable around, no disrespect to the others, was Claude Le Roy. He was very open to every player, you feel confident around him. He gave you that," he told Angel TV.
"Everybody has their style of coaching but what I saw of him was different. Le Roy gives you all the confidence in the all world. He tells you player what you want to play and I am just the coach and will guide you with the tactics," he added.

Despite enjoying his time with the French tactician, Gyan admitted that he could not give him his all to the gaffer when he needed him and that was the latter stages of his stay in Ghana.

"I started well with him, that's from 2007 but the time that was important, which was CAN 2008, I was not myself. I risked myself to play because there were injuries and I even ended up at the hospital," he said.

Gyan made 109 appearances for the Black Stars, scoring 51 goals for the country, per Transfermarkt.
