Raphael Varane has been ruled out of the Real Madrid squad for their Champions League encounter against Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday, April 6.

The French World Cup winner was said to have tested positive for coronavirus hours before the crucial quarterfinal encounter according to information released by the La Liga outfit.

This means that Zinedine Zidane will be without his two key centre-backs as Sergio Ramos is currently out with a calf injury while in action for Spain during international duty last month.

"Real Madrid CF informs that our player Raphael Varane tested positive in the Covid-19 test he underwent this morning."

Varane was dressed but didn't play any part in last weekend's 2-0 win over Eibar in a bid to rest him for their mid-week encounter, but he will have to be isolated to recover away from the team.

The France international has made 36 appearances this season and has been an ever-present figure at the back in their 2020-21 Champions League campaign.

He has scored twice in 27 Spanish League appearances so far this campaign as the race to become the champion for this season hots up.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Real Madrid welcome Liverpool to the Santiago Bernabeu for their Champions League last-eight stage clash on Tuesday, April 6.

Both sides will be meeting for the first time since their last face-off at the Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv three years ago.

The Spanish League giants ended up winning the battle and also won the title - their 13th in the history of the championship.
