Victor Boniface made his long-awaited return from injury during Bayer Leverkusen's DFB-Pokal semi-final win over Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday, April 3.

The Super Eagles international has been recovering from an injury in the last three months and returned to action in a crucial period for his team.

Leverkusen coach, Xabi Alonso, said he is happy to have his star back as the 2023/24 Bundesliga enters the final stretch.

The 23-year-old centre-forward entered the fray in the 66th minute, replacing Patrick Schick. He didn't get on the scoresheet but got valuable minutes, as his team secured a comfortable 4-0 win.

Leverkusen are marching towards their first Bundesliga title. They are still undefeated this season and are 13 points clear with seven matches to go.

Despite missing plenty of games, Boniface is the club's leading scorer this season, with 16 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.

As he returns, Leverkusen will look to secure the title in the next few games.

Alonso on Boniface's return

Speaking after their win over Fortuna Dusseldorf, Alsonso was delighted with the return of his striker at a crucial point in the season.

"It was special for him after three months out. He worked hard to get back on the pitch. He wanted to enjoy it with the players. We needed him back," Alonso said via Complete Sports.

Boniface will bolster Leverkusen's attack in the remaining matches as they go for the treble.

The German side extended their unbeaten record to 40 games this past weekend and are looking to win the league without a single defeat.

Boniface opens up on injury

Sports Brief also previously reported on Boniface explaining his injury journey after his return to action for Leverkusen.

The Nigerian said it was difficult since he was injured just after AFCON 2023, but he had support from his coach and teammates.
