Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara has disclosed that the team's Round of 16 exit at the 2023 African Cup of Nations will serve as the fuel to drive him into winning the competition.

Camara broke down in tears, crying profusely after the Teranga Lions failed to defend the title following their defeat to Ivory Coast on penalties in Yamoussoukro.

The FC Metz star returned to national team duties in the March international break as Senegal faced Gabon and Benin in friendlies.

The highly-rated youngster starred as Senegal brushed aside the Panthers of Gabon 3-0 on Friday in France.

Reminiscing the disappointing night at the Stade Charles Konan Banny, Camara indicated that he has managed to overcome the defeat to the Elephants.

“I always keep this sadness. It serves as motivation for me. I tell myself that I am not going to let go of it until I have won a CAN. So it’s something that pushes me forward. When I watch videos online now, it no longer hurts. I have a goal now to replace these tears with an African Cup,” he said after the game, as quoted by Wiw Sport.

Camara is expected to start when Senegal engage Benin in their second friendly of the international break on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, having enjoyed a fast rise to his career for both club and country, the 20-year-old is attracting interest from teams in England, as reported by Livescore.

In 2022, Camara won the U20 Africa Cup of Nations as well as the Championship of African Nations with Senegal.

Camara inconsolable after AFCON exit

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Senegal midfielder, Lamine Camara was carried into the dressing room following the defeat to Ivory Coast in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The FC Metz youngster, who had a good tournament, started for the Teranga Lions before he was replaced in the 87th minute as the AFCON host forced the game into extra time.

Habib Diallo opened the scoring for Senegal after finishing off a Sadio Mane assist, but second-half substitute Franck Kessie scored late to level for Ivory Coast.
