  • Luis Enrique has joked about benching Kylian Mbappe in the Champions League
  • Enrique will face his former side, Barcelona, in the quarter-finals of the competition
  • He has already benched or taken off the forward early multiple times this season

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has disclosed what it would take to bench Kylian Mbappe for the upcoming Champions League clash against Barcelona.

Enrique will face his former side for the first time since leaving in 2017 in the spicy quarter-final showdown next month. Having won the competition with La Blaugrana in 2015, he hopes to become the first manager to deliver it to the French giants.

The tie will most certainly be centred around Mbappe, who can singlehandedly determine the course of matches. He is expected to have a major say in the double-legged fixture in what is believed will be his last attempt to win the European trophy with PSG.

Enrique: Maybe I can rest Mbappe vs Barcelona

Speaking on his Twitch channel, Enrique shared the circumstances under which he would leave Mbappe out of the tie. The Spaniard was responding to a question of how many subscribers it would take for him to play his star forward as centre-back. The 53-year-old had a better answer.

"How many subs to play Mbappe as the centre-back? Not subs, but donate €4m or €5m to this charity foundation and maybe I can rest Kylian. Send me the invoice!" as quoted by Barca Universal.

The said charity foundation was started by the manager himself in honour of his late daughter, Xana, who lost her battle with bone cancer in 2019. She was only nine years old. It aims to create awareness and raise funds to help children battle cancer.

The first leg of the Champions League tie is slated for April 10 in France, with the return leg a week later at Camp Nou.

Thierry Henry praises Mbappe

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Thierry Henry lavished praise on Mbappe ahead of his expected move to Real Madrid.

Henry admitted that Mbappe had already surpassed him as a player, calling the French captain 'extraordinary'.

The Arsenal icon hopes to have Mbappe as one of the over-aged players for his France squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
