  • Nicolas Jackson is one yellow card away from a two-match suspension
  • EPL's enhanced rules on suspensions have already punished two players
  • Sports Brief breaks down the rules and explains the players close to suspension

A couple of Premier League players are on the verge of earning automatic suspensions should they pick up more yellow cards in the next games.

David Moyes and West Ham will have to do without Edson Alvarez for the clashes against Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur after the international break after the Mexican picked up his 10th booking of the season against Aston Villa.

How cards and suspensions work in the Premier League

Premier League rules on card suspensions dictate that any player who gets five yellow cards in the first 19 games of the season will be liable for a one-match suspension. Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson was among the high-profile players nabbed by this rule.

Afterwards, if a player accumulates 10 yellow cards in the first 32 games of the season, the player would be handed a two-match ban, where Alvarez now falls.

These cards are Premier League specific, and bookings gotten in other domestic cups, i.e., FA Cup and Carabao Cup, do not count. The suspensions are not served in any other competition as well.

For red cards, a player will be handed a three-match ban for a direct red card on violent conduct, which can be reduced or upheld after an appeal. A two-match ban will be handed for other red-card-related offences.

If a player gets a second red card within one season, a one-match ban will be added to their suspension. This explains why Tottenham's Yves Bissouma was suspended for four games in December. The Malian leads the fray in the number of most red cards this season with two, the same as Sheffield United's Oliver McBurnie.

Back to the yellow cards, apart from Alvarez, Fulham's Joao Palhina has already served his two-match suspension for exceeding the limit. The Premier League will return with game week 30 after the break, meaning that a couple of players will have to watch their steps for the next three game weeks (game week 32 included).

Why Amad Diallo will be available for FA Cup semis

Unlike yellow cards, suspensions resulting from red cards can be served in other competitions.

Sports Brief had earlier explained why Amad Diallo would be available for the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City despite getting a red card vs Liverpool.

Diallo will serve his suspension in Manchester United's next game, which is a Premier League clash against Brentford.
