  • Chelsea faces the risk of failing to comply with the EPL's profitability and sustainability rules
  • If they are found guilty of breaching the rules, the West London outfit will be sanctioned
  • The Blues have endured their fair share of struggles this season under Mauricio Pochettino

Chelsea reportedly faces the prospect of getting more points deducted than Nottingham Forest and Everton next season.

The Premier League has embarked on cracking the whip on clubs breaching financial guidelines.

Nottingham and Everton are the two clubs who have fallen victim to the stringent rules this season.

According to Sky Sports, the Toffees were initially docked 10 points before the punishment was revised to six points after a successful appeal by the club.

Earlier in the week, Forest suffered a similar fate after they were deducted four points for flouting the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

The move saw the Nuno Espirito-tutored side drop to the relegation zone, with Luton Town moving to safety.

Chelsea risk more severe punishment

According to Daily Star, Chelsea risk facing a more severe punishment than Nottingham and Everton next season.

The Blues, who have spent nearly £1 billion on players under Todd Boehly, are yet to be charged with breaching EPL's profit and sustainability guidelines.

However, it is understood that they are facing a daunting task to abide by after struggling to meet on-field targets.

Stefan Borson, a former Manchester City financial advisor, also claimed that Chelsea could face a harsher punishment next season.

"This year, from an operating perspective, is going to be even worse than last year because they've got no Champions League and no Europe at all," Borson said.
"Really, they have to find buyers for Trevoh Chalobah for £20m, Armando Broja for £40m, and Conor Gallagher for £50m. It's those sorts of deals that need to be done," he added.

Premier League teams to face deductions

In related news, Sports Brief previously reported that despite the rare nature of a points deduction, Everton are not the first Premier League team to be dealt such a blow.

Middlesbrough was the first team penalised with a point-deduction sanction in 1997.
