  • Southgate has been in charge of the England national team for eight years since 2016

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly made England manager Gareth Southgate his priority to replace Erik ten Hag in the Manchester United dugout next season.

Regardless of how this season ends, the British billionaire is keen to replace the Dutch manager, making it one of his first calls since becoming the club's minority owner.

Southgate is expected to lead England to Euro 2024 in Germany before he steps down if hired.

Sports Brief looks at five managers who could take his place in charge of the national team.

Gareth Southgate’s potential replacements

1. Graham Potter

It is the dream of every English manager to coach the national team. Per The Telegraph, Chelsea moved ahead of England to hire Graham Potter in 2022. He was on the shortlist in case Southgate was released after the 2022 World Cup.

2. Eddie Howe

Howe’s future at Newcastle United is uncertain, and he is high up on the FA list in case the current national team manager departs. However, he did not have short-term interest in the job, as reported by The Athletic, before the World Cup in Qatar.

3. Steven Gerrard

The Liverpool legend was successful in charge of Rangers during his time in the Scottish Premiership. His time with Aston Villa in the Premier League was nothing to write home about. He is in charge of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia but would say yes to his country's job.

4. Frank Lampard

Lampard has been unemployed since leaving Chelsea as interim manager at the end of last season. He has managed Derby County and Everton. He will be one of the first names on the consideration list for the Three Lions if Southgate departs.

5. Jose Mourinho

The Special One is a free agent after leaving AS Roma in January. He is linked to several jobs in the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and even Saudi Arabia. He could be a masterstroke appointment for England. Per The Guardian, the country considered him when he was sacked by Chelsea in 2007.

United stars want Southgate

Sports Brief reported on United players’s feelings about Southgate after the English national team manager was rumoured to be the favourite to replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old, who has been praised for his excellent man management, reportedly has the seal of approval from senior players in the team, many of whom he had worked with before.
