  • South Africa's head coach, Hugo Broos, is upset with Rulani Mokwena
  • The Mamelodi Sundowns manager has been publicly discussing injuries
  • The Belgian wants Masandawana doctors to provide their medical reports

South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos, has voiced his discontent with recent comments by Rulani Mokwena regarding injuries to Mamelodi Sundowns' players after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Mokwena, tasked with managing both his Bafana Bafana players and Sundowns' performance without key individuals, recently spoke of the ongoing struggles of Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena.

Following Masandawana's victory over Maritzburg United in the Nedbank Cup, he said the heroic goalkeeper was struggling with his shoulder while the midfielder was harbouring knee issues.

Although Williams and Mokoena were rested against Maritzburg, Mokwena hinted that they would likely join the national team for their upcoming fixture in Algeria.

However, Broos expressed frustration, asserting that the Bafana medical team had not received any official reports from Sundowns regarding the players' injuries.

The national coach insisted that if they were genuinely unfit, the club should have provided medical documentation rather than discussing the matter with the press.

"I’m very sorry, but I don’t like that kind of thing and telling the press some things. They have to call us and say, 'Look, this is the problem with the player, and this is the medical report'," lamented the Belgian, as quoted by iDiski Times.

When questioned about rumours regarding Sundowns players not travelling with the national team, the 71-year-old dismissed the speculation, urging the club's medical staff to communicate directly with their counterparts in the national team.

Bafana Bafana face Andorra at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba on Thursday, March 21, before taking on FIFA Series hosts, Algeria, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Tuesday, March 26, as reported by All Africa.

Broos shakes up Bafana squad

Sports Brief also previously reported on Broos introducing 10 new players to the Bafana Bafana squad.

Three players are yet to earn caps, as most were not part of the team that won the AFCON 2023 bronze.

The FIFA Series initiative aims to offer member associations like South Africa more playing opportunities.
