  • Luis Boa Morte is set to become Guinea-Bissau's next coach
  • The Fulham coach will leave the club at the end of the season
  • He will take over from coach, Baciro Cande, who left last month

Luis Boa Morte is set to leave Fulham at the end of the season and become Guinea-Bissau's new head coach.

Boa Morte will reportedly replace Baciro Cande, who left the role after a disappointing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast.

Boa Morte was a Fulham player for six-and-a-half years and returned to the club in 2021 as an assistant to head coach, Marco Silva.

According to the Athletic, the 46-year-old played for the London club between 2000 and 2007 and made 250 appearances. He also played for Arsenal, Southampton, and West Ham United in England, in addition to representing Portugal at the 2006 World Cup.

Aside from his role at Fulham, he has had coaching roles at Portimonense and Maccabi Haifa.

Boa Morte's immediate goal is stated to be getting Guinea-Bissau to the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and possibly the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Boa Morte: new era for Guinea-Bissau

Boa Morte has some big shoes to fill. He replaces the legendary Cande, who bowed out after the 2023 AFCON.

Guinea-Bissau finished bottom of Group A at the tournament behind hosts and champions Ivory Coast, finalists Nigeria, and dark horses Equatorial Guinea, losing all three of their matches.

Cande was hired in 2016 and helped the country qualify for four AFCON tournaments, although his record was not great. The West Africans have failed to win a single AFCON match since the 2017 tournament, per the BBC.

Egypt boss Rui Vitoria, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi, Gambia's Tom Saintfiet, Ghana's Chris Hughton, Tunisia's Jalel Kadri, and Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset are other coaches who left their roles after the tournament.

Guinea-Bissau upsets Nigeria

Sports Brief also previously reported on Guinea-Bissau beating Nigeria away from home in a qualifier for the 2023 edition of the AFCON.

Troyes star, Mama Balde, scored in the 30th minute in Abuja for the Djurtus (Wild Dogs) to hand the Super Eagles a rare defeat at home.
