According to The Guardian, Nottingham admitted to the breach, which led to punishment.

The development has had a significant impact on the Premier League standings, especially on the bottom end of the table.

Per The Mirror, Nottingham is now facing a daunting battle to preserve their top-flight status, with the club now sitting 18th in the standings with 21 points.

Sheffield United and Burnley are the other two teams in the relegation zone, with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

As such, Luton Town are the biggest beneficiary of Nottingham's tribulations, with the Rob Edwards men climbing to 17th.

Top standings remain unchanged

Meanwhile, the other top positions remain unchanged, with Arsenal still topping the charts with 64 points.

They are on level on points with second-placed Liverpool, while reigning champions Manchester City sit third with 63 points.

Aston Villa complete the top four podium with 56 points, three points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Elsewhere, Manchester United are placed sixth with 47 points after 28 rounds of matches.

Below is how the bottom six teams after Nottingham were docked points:

15. Brentford Pld 29 - Pts 26

16. Everton* Pld 28 - Pts 25

17. Luton Town - Pld 29 - Pts 22

18. Nottingham Forest** Pld 29 - Pts 21

19. Burnley - Pld 29 - Pts 17

Premier League teams to face deductions

Despite the rare nature of a points deduction, Everton are not the first Premier League team to be dealt such a blow.

Sports Brief also reported that Middlesbrough were the first team penalised with a point-deduction sanction in 1997.
