  • Chelsea had a mass exodus of players at the club last summer
  • The club also brought in many new players, primarily youths
  • Some of their former players are balling while they struggle

Chelsea have been moving numbers in the transfer market since the American consortium led by Todd Boehly took over the club two years ago in 2022.

The club has invested over £1 billion in incoming players, most of whom are young players. At the same time, they had a mass clearout of old players and big earners.

The Blues finished 12th in Boehly's first season, and in the second, they are currently 11th with 10 games left, while some of their former players are excelling.

Sports Brief looks at five former Chelsea stars having a great season.

Ex-Chelsea players having a great season

1. Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian forward is still on the club's books as he is on loan, but his career at Stamford Bridge is as good as over. He is on loan at AS Roma and has 18 goals in all competitions while his parent club struggles in attack. Per Sky Sports, he has a release clause of £38 million and will leave permanently this summer.

2. Christian Pulisic

The American winger struggled for fitness during his time in London. Many fans believed he would be the face of Boehly's ownership as he is the biggest USMNT star but was sold to AC Milan. He has 11 goals and eight assists for Milan this season.

3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Aubameyang was not given the chance at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel was sacked after the striker played only 59 minutes for the manager who signed him. He endured a torrid one year and moved to Olympique Marseille. He has 23 goals and nine assists in all competitions. Per UEFA.com, he is the Europa League's all-time top scorer with 33 goals.

4. Kalidou Koulibaly

The Senegalese defender spent only a season at Chelsea before he was shipped to Saudi Arabia. He was not given time to adapt, having spent eight years at Napoli before moving to England. He has been an integral part of the Al-Hilal squad that won 28 games in a row and conceded only eight goals in that period.

5. Ross Barkley

This is an unexpected name on the list, having struggled since leaving Chelsea. He did not cut it at Aston Villa and OGC Nice. He returned to England with Luton Town, and his form has got fans claiming he should be with England and Euro 2024.

Five loanees Chelsea must recall

Sports Brief analysed five loanees Chelsea must recall next season to challenge or displace some first-team stars after impressing in their time away.

Lukaku is top of the list. He is the best forward owned by the club and also better than all options linked to the London side in the number nine position.
