Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, played a pivotal role in securing a Premier Soccer League (PSL) contract for Orlando Pirates midfielder, Patrick Maswanganyi.

The duo's connection has deepened as they were both selected to represent Bafana Bafana in the upcoming FIFA Series International Friendlies.

The team will play against Andorra and Algeria on March 21 and 26, respectively.

Maswanganyi honed his skills at Farouk Khan's Stars of Africa Academy before embarking on a journey to Portugal and ultimately back to South Africa. Despite his talent, securing a spot in the domestic league proved to be a challenging endeavour.

Popular commentator, Arnold Rankoko, has shed light on the 25-year-old's struggles before turning pro.

Rankoko recounted the player's perseverance during his stint at SuperSport United, where he spent a year training diligently without assurance of a contract. During this time, Williams, recognizing his potential, advocated for his signing to Matsa management.

“You know who pleaded with Stan Matthews? It was Ronwen Williams, he begged Stan to sign him. Ronwen could see he wasn’t just an ordinary player. At SuperSport they weren’t sure about him," said Rankoko, as quoted on Far Post.

Williams' endorsement proved instrumental as Maswanganyi secured a contract ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.

Having joined SuperSport United's youth academy at 12, the Bafana goalkeeper also became a mainstay in the first team, amassing numerous accolades.

Maswanganyi's transition to Pirates has been seamless, with the midfielder quickly making an impact on the pitch.

He will be vital when the team take on Hungry Lions in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday, March 16, at the Orlando Stadium.

Maswanganyi vows not to change at Pirates

Sports Brief reported that Maswanganyi vowed not to change what makes him loved at the Buccaneers.

He is part of an attacking core that brings the best out in each other.

From Stars of Africa to Portugal and back to the PSL in three years, he has finally found a home with the Sea Robbers.
