The Nigeria Football Federation has received at least 10 applications for the Super Eagles job as the body prepares to find a new coach for the national team following the departure of Jose Peseiro.

The NFF set a deadline of Tuesday, March 12 as the final day for all interested parties to submit their applications for the vacant role after it ended contract extension talks with the previous manager.

According to Soccernet, former Barcelona winger Emmanuel Amuneke and current assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George tops the list of candidates who have applied for the job.

Ex-Cameroon manager Antonio Conceicao, who guided the Indomitable Lions to a third-place finish at the 2021 AFCON, is the only foreigner to have applied to coach the Super Eagles.

Others also in contention are former national team handlers Samson Siasia, Salisu Yusuf, and Sylvanus Okpala, while Sunday Oliseh is believed to have also indicated interest in taking over the role.

Finidi to take charge temporarily

Meanwhile, Finidi is expected to take temporary charge of the Super Eagles in their upcoming international friendlies against Ghana's Black Stars and Mali's Eagles later this month, Daily Post reports.

The current Enyimba manager who was part of Nigeria’s technical crew to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, is among the managers in contention to the permanent job as the NFF gets ready to name a new coach.

Nigeria will take on Ghana at the Grande de Marrakech on Friday, March 22 before they square up against Mali four days later in the same venue.

Peseiro handpicked Nigeria’s friendly list

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Peseiro was behind the 26-man list released by the NFF for the upcoming friendly games against Ghana and Mali later this month.

The 63-year-old tactician had compiled the list immediately after the 2023 AFCON in anticipation he was going to continue in his role as the Super Eagles coach after the competition.
