  • Vincent Enyeama has refuted claims of cursing the Super Eagles
  • The former Lille goalkeeper praised Stanley Nwabali's emergence
  • The Nigeria legend hopes Nwabali's emergence will silence critics

Legendary goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, has broken his silence on the emergence of Stanley Nwabali, dismissing claims of any curse on the Super Eagles.

Enyeama's legacy as one of Africa's greatest goalkeepers is undisputed, owing to his stellar performances for the Super Eagles, Enyimba International FC, Lille, and various Israeli clubs.

However, his international career ended amid controversy following a fallout with former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.

Amid uncertainties surrounding Maduka Okoye's availability and Francis Uzoho's inconsistent performances, Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro turned to the Chippa United shot-stopper for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite lacking prior experience in competitive international matches, Nwabali's standout performances during the tournament in Ivory Coast propelled the team to the final.

Enyeama expressed satisfaction with the 27-year-old’s contributions and hoped for his continued success with the national team. He is confident Nwabali's emergence will silence critics who wrongly attributed the team's goalkeeping woes to him.

“I received a lot of nasty messages accusing me of all sorts, but thankfully, Stanley came in and helped change that narrative by breaking through the ranks. I didn’t curse the national team; if I had the power to do that, I could have currently changed the economic fortunes of Nigeria,” Enyeama remarked, as reported by Afrik Foot Nigeria.

Nwabali's impressive form earned him a spot in Nigeria’s 27-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also revealed on March 3 that two prominent clubs expressed interest in Nwabali's services.

"Nigeria's goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is catching the attention of clubs like Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia and Queens Park Rangers in the UK. Chippa United will weigh his options in the coming months," said Fabrizio, as seen on his X handle.

Nwabali’s agent discloses criteria to pick next club

Sports Brief reported that Nwabali’s agent, Mohammed Lawal, disclosed Stanley Nwabali's next move will be determined by the club that will guarantee him playing time.

The keeper is not yet ready to relinquish his position in the national team.

He would prefer a club that guarantees playing time to retain his spot in the starting XI.
