Double School Tragedy in Johannesburg As Jeppe High Rugby Player Dies After Match

Staff and learners in Johannesburg are dealing with two incidents of tragedy this week.

On Tuesday, March 5, a Jeppe High Grade 11 boy collapsed after a rugby match and the following day, a teacher from Hyde Park High was found dead of a suspected suicide.

The Gauteng Department of Education has reacted to the incidents, calling them disheartening and tragic.

Kaiden Bowie is reported to have been feeling unwell at the conclusion of the match and required medical attention shortly after.

The Gauteng Department of Education stated that paramedics assisted the boy as they waited for an ambulance to arrive. sadly, he passed away while the ambulance was on scene.

The incident later in the week involved the discovery of a body on the sports fields of Hyde Park High. It is believed a teacher hung themself on school property. The GDE's Steve Mabona said:

“According to information at our disposal, the educator was allegedly found hanging on the sports grounds of the school on Wednesday morning. Paramedics certified him dead on arrival."

It is protocol for the GDE to offer psycho-social support and counsellors from the South African Depression and Anxiety Group to provide support, as reported by Rosebank Killarney Gazette.

Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane relayed his condolences to the families involved. He was quoted by The Citizen as saying:

“We are deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our most sincere condolences."

This week's incidents come two weeks after a primary school learner shot his principal in an East Rand suburb in Johannesburg. The principal survived by pretending to be dead, as relayed by TimesLive.

TS Galaxy bus accident claims life

Sports Brief recently reported on an accident involving TS Galaxy's bus which claimed the life of a woman.

The Rockets' bus collided with a light motor vehicle while they were travelling to face Mamelodi Sundowns.

None of the players or staff were injured but the trauma of the incident led to a postponement of the fixture.
