Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, has confirmed Victor Boniface could make his return from injury after the international break in March after a long absence from the squad.

The 22-year-old striker has been on the sidelines since early January, after suffering an adductor injury while in Nigeria's Abu Dhabi camp ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

According to Complete Sports, Alonso said Boniface could make his first Bayer Leverkusen appearance since January against Hoffenheim later this month or Fortuna Dusseldorf in the German Cup.

The Nigerian international, who has been out for over two months, returned to running duties last week and is ahead of schedule for his return to action, which was initially slated for late April.

Boniface still remains Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer with 24 goal contributions (16 goals and eight assists) in 23 games across all competitions for the German club this season.

Arsenal adds Boniface to wishlist

Meanwhile, Arsenal has added Boniface to a four-man shortlist of strikers the Gunners are targeting in the summer transfer window, as Mikel Arteta continues to strengthen his squad, Soccernet reports.

The 22-year-old forward’s impressive first season in Germany has caught the attention of the North London club, which is now willing to battle Chelsea for the Nigerian international.

Also on Arsenal’s four-man striker’s shortlist includes Boniface’s international teammate, Victor Osimhen, Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, as well as Brighton and Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro.

More top clubs chase Boniface

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that clubs such as Juventus, Napoli, AC Milan, Chelsea, and Arsenal have reportedly expressed interest in signing Boniface in the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old Nigerian joined Bayer Leverkusen from Union St Gilloise last summer and has established himself as an important member of the side thanks to his good goal contributions.

Boniface, who is set to return to full fitness in March after being sidelined with an adductor injury in January, has scored 16 goals in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
