Victor Osimhen: Former Napoli Star Blasts Nigeria Striker for Poor Penalty Record

Victor Osimhen came under fire over the weekend for missing a penalty in their 2-1 win over Juventus in the Serie A.

Former Napoli player Stefan Schwoch has called out the Super Eagles superstar for missing too many penalties.

The Nigeria striker had an opportunity to score his sixth goal in five matches, but his penalty was saved by Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny late in the game. Giacomo Raspadori scored the rebound to hand the defending Swerie champions a huge win.

Before that game, Osimhen has scored in every Napoli game since returning from an unsuccessful 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Nigeria.

He scored against Barcelona in the Champions League and scored in the Serie A against Cagliari before bagging a hat-trick against Sassuolo.

Osimhen's penalty technique questioned

Schwoch, who played for Napoli in the late 1990s faulted Osimhen's penalty technique, concluding that the Nigerian is not good at taking them.

“It’s impossible not to save it (Osimhen’s penalty), given his body posture. Three errors out of seven attempts from the spot are too many,” Schwoch said via Complete Sports.

“There are phenomenal players who, however, aren’t skilled from eleven metres. Osimhen appears to be one of them.”

Osimhen didn't take penalties for Nigeria during the 2023 AFCON. Defender William Troost-Ekong was on penalty duties, and he didn't disappoint.

Calzona's warning to Osimhen

Sports Brief earlier reported on Calzona sending a warning to Osimhen and Napoli players after the Nigerian was subbed off shortly after scoring against Barcelona in the Champions League.

The newly-appointed coach of the reigning Serie A champions stressed that he doesn't look at the players' names and that any players would be substituted if they did not meet expectations.
