  • Samuel Chukwueze completed a transfer to AC Milan in the summer of 2023
  • The Nigerian has largely failed to live up to the expectations many had of him
  • An Italian journalist has hit out at the forward after his disappointing showing

AC Milan’s season so far has been characterised by a flurry of inconsistent showing all around.

The Rossoneri have often failed to live up to expectations against smaller opponents and crumbled when facing teams of a similar calibre.

Throughout the campaign, Stefano Pioli's side have recorded some lacklustre results, including a humbling 5-1 defeat against city rivals, Inter Milan.

The 2021-22 Italian Serie A champions find themselves in the grip of a three-game winless streak, which notably features disappointing losses to Monza and Rennes.

This apparent dip in form has led to heightened scrutiny of the 58-year-old manager.

Veteran journalist, Bruno Longhi, has stepped forward to defend Pioli, however, attributing the team's decline primarily to the inconsistency of the players' performances.

Longhi slams Milan players

In an interview, as captured by media outlet Bola Vip, the 76-year-old emphasised the inconsistencies of several summer signings, saying the manager had been let down.

"[Christian] Pulisic and [Ruben] Loftus-Cheek have international experience, but their performance [is] far too inconsistent. The same goes for [Tijani] Reijnders: some matches are perfect, others too light and dull."

Regarding Nigeria's Samuel Chukwueze, the veteran journalist cuttingly remarked:

"As for Chukwueze, he has largely been a disappointment."

The Nigerian, who scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists in his final season with Villarreal, has largely underperformed since his ₤20 million transfer, recording only two goals and one assist.

Longhi's comments echo Pioli's own sentiments, as the manager has publicly called for improvement from the Nigerian winger following his team's Serie A draw against Atalanta.

Pioli calls out Chukwueze

In another report, Sports Brief stated that the manager of AC Milan, Pioli, criticised Chukwueze following the disappointing draw against Atalanta, at the San Siro Stadium.

The latter was an unused substitute in the fixture, with Pioli subsequently providing the winger with tips on how to usurp Pulisic, who has so far been favoured over the Nigerian.
