  • Everton were hit with a 10-point deduction in 2023 for allegedly breaching financial guidelines
  • However, the English club appealed the decision and had the punishment reduced by six points
  • The latest development has seen the Toffees climb up to 15th on the Premier League standings

The Premier League table has significantly changed after Everton's points deduction was brought down from 10 points to six.

The Toffees were handed a 10-point deduction back in November for breaching Premier League financial guidelines, dealing their promising start to the campaign a massive blow.

According to Metro UK, the Merseyside club allegedly broke profitability and sustainability rules in the period ending in the 2021-22 season.

However, Everton appealed the decision, with an independent commission selected to hear the appeal.

After weeks of waiting, the commission has delivered its verdict and has seen Everton's points deduction come down from 10 to six with immediate effect.

"Everton can confirm an Appeal Board has concluded that the points deduction imposed by an independent Premier League Commission in November be reduced from 10 points to six points, with immediate effect," a statement said on Monday.

The Mirror reports that Luton Town were the biggest casualty after Everton got back their four points.

Sean Dyche's men occupy 15th place in the standings with 25 points, on level with 16th-placed Brentford.

Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United are the three teams in the relegation zone, while Nottingham Forest are four points off safety.

Meanwhile, the other spots remain unchanged, with Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal still in the top three.

Aston Villa complete the top four podium ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, who sit in fifth and sixth places, respectively.

Premier League teams to face deductions

Despite the rare nature of a points deduction, Everton are not the first Premier League team to be dealt such a blow.

Sports Brief also reported that Middlesbrough was the first team penalised with a point-deduction sanction in 1997.

Boro failed to report for a game against Blackburn Rovers in December 1996 due to a claim of 23 players being sick.
