Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has lashed out at the match officials following his side's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal clash on Tuesday, April 6.

Two goals from Vinicius Jr and one from Marco Asensio ensured Mohamed Salah's 51st-minute effort ended up a mere consolation.

The Reds have a chance to redeem their image at Anfield next week but will need to score at least two un-replied goals if they must advance to the last-four stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, Klopp couldn't hide his disappointment at the referee Felix Brych who he accused of having a personal vendetta against Sadio Mane.

The forward was one of the most fouled players on the pitch in the game and all the referee could do was wave at him to get back on his feet while the proceeding continued.

Daily Star reports that after the game, Klopp was seen shouting at the referee over his handling of the match. Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Liverpool boss said:

"The situation with Sadio today, the ref I don't know. Was it something personal? Whenever Sadio went down he didn't get anything to be honest.
"I thought he was unfair with Sadio, that's what I told him. He didn't lose us the game but you need just an OK ref."

Liverpool will now be hoping they can overturn this result at Anfield in a week as they did with Barcelona at the same stage of the competition in 2019.

But Klopp isn't expecting any miracles, as he admitted it will be a tough game without fans in attendance at Anfield.

"Of course, it is completely different. If you want to have some emotional memories, you watch the Barcelona game back and 80% of this game was the atmosphere in the stadium, I would say. We have to do without that.
“It’s not that I sit here and think comebacks are our thing and that we do that all the time. We have from time to time, but we always had supporters in the stadium. We don’t have that this time. I don’t know if we can do it, but I can promise we will give it a proper try.”

The Reds welcome Aston Villa to their stadium this weekend while Real Madrid face-off with bitter rivals Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu - a potential La Liga deciding match.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Real Madrid have taken a huge step towards booking a place in the semifinals of the Champions League after seeing off Liverpool in the first leg of their last eight fixture played on the evening of Tuesday, April 6, at Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

Vinicius Jr was arguably the man of the moment during the thrilling clash, with the Real youngster stepping up to fill the void left by a number of key players who missed the clash.

The Reds were looking to avenge their 3-1 heartbreaking defeat in the hands of the Spanish giants during their 2018 meeting in the finals of the competition played in Kyiv, Ukraine.
