  • Calvin Bassey has scored his first Premier League goal since joining Fulham last summer
  • The Nigerian defender scored the opening goal in Fulham's win over Manchester United
  • The ex-Leicester City star was not the only Nigerian to be on the scoresheet at Old Trafford

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey scored his first Premier League goal for Fulham in their game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The former Leicester City defender was part of the Nigerian national team that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was a significant member of the squad.

Fulham were the better team for most of the first 45 minutes but could not bury their chances.

In a viral video on social media, Bassey gave Fulham the lead against the Red Devils to score his first EPL goal for the Cottagers since joining them from Ajax in the summer.

The Nigerian defender pounced on a corner kick from Andreas Pereira, with his first effort not being good enough, but his second effort with his weaker foot went past Andre Onana.

Harry Maguire levelled things up for the home team in the 89th minute, but Alex Iwobi's late winner sealed all three points for Marco Silva's side.

The Red Devils were missing the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw, and Lisandro Martinez due to injury, while the away side was without their starting striker, Raul Jiminez, in the game.

Fulham's next match will be against Brighton at the Craven Cottage, while Manchester United will face their city rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Bassey breaks silence after AFCON heartbreak

Sports Brief earlier reported on Bassey finally reacting after the Super Eagles suffered heartbreak in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Ivory Coast.

The Nigerian national team lost to the host nation 2-1 in the final after beating the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Angola, South Africa in the knockout stage.

The Fulham defender was at the heart of Nigeria’s defence during the competition and helped his side keep an impressive four straight clean sheets in the run-up to the semi-final.
