FootballWayne Rooney Discloses the Sacrifice He Is Willing to Take to Become a Top Manager
- Wayne Rooney was sacked by Birmingham City after 15 games
- The former Man United striker has opened up about his ambitions
- He admitted he would like to return to football management
Wayne Rooney recently made an interesting admission, seven weeks after he was sacked by Birmingham City.
Rooney was dismissed by the Championship club in January after just 15 games in charge after a dismal run of form left the Blues near the relegation zone.
This was the 38-year-old’s third assignment in management after stints with Derby County and DC United.
Despite having a rocky start in the dugout, Rooney wants to fight to become a top manager, even if it means starting from a lower-tier club.

Rooney willing to start with a League Two club
The Manchester United legend appeared on the Stick to Football podcast where he told his former teammate Gary Neville about his ambitions to succeed as a coach.
“I want to get back into managing and I want to prove myself – whether that’s League Two, League One or Championship,” he said, as cited on The Mirror.
“It’s all experience – I’m only 38, I’ve had three managerial jobs. I’ve got quite a bit of experience, like with Derby in administration, and going out to the States [to manage D.C. United].
According to Rooney, he wanted to avoid relying on his status as a former top player to achieve his goals as a manager.
“Of course, my playing experience will help me, but I’m right at the bottom from a managerial point of view, and I want to work my way up.”
He maintained that his experience with Derby County, DC United and Birmingham helped him and his cause.

FootballMore controversially, the retired forward also hinted at joining Pep Guardiola at Manchester City if he ever got the call.
Despite leaving Manchester United in 2017, Rooney remains the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 253 goals. No active player at the club is close to breaking his record.
Rooney agrees with Hazard
In other news, Sports Brief reported on how Rooney was in agreement with Eden Hazard over a Cristiano Ronaldo question.
Both retired players agreed that Ronaldo was more focused on goals, whilst Lionel Messi was more of a natural talent in football.
Ronaldo and Messi are in the twilight years of their careers, with the former playing in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, while Messi is gearing up for the new season with Inter Miami.
