Former Stellenbosch FC star, Olwethu Makhanya, has opened up on the hurdles he encountered since his move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

Makhanya traded his Stellenbosch FC jersey for Philadelphia Union in July 2023, right after the conclusion of the 2022/23 PSL season.

The defender flourished during his time at ‘Stellies’, contributing immensely to their commendable sixth-place finish in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and their journey to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Despite making 24 appearances across all competitions and helping the team keep five clean sheets, Makhanya has felt the pressure of transitioning to the MLS.

Adapting to a new style of play and acclimating to a different environment posed significant challenges for the 19-year-old.

“The team’s style of play is totally different. I’ve been trying to adapt to the environment, culture and everything, that has been challenging. But I think it’s just a matter of time until I get it the way it should be done,” said Makhanya, as quoted on Far Post.

Reflecting on his journey, Makhanya stressed the importance of his time at Stellenbosch in preparing him for the next chapter of his career.

Recalling the scouting process that led to his recruitment by the Philadelphia Union, Makhanya revealed how a sports consultant from the USA took notice of his performance during a crucial Nedbank Cup match against Mamelodi Sundowns.

"They said they like my style of play, they think the type of football they play that I can fit in very well and age is still on my side, there's enough time to adapt," he explained, as reported by SNL24.

Stellenbosch reject offer for Iqraam Rayners

Sports Brief reported that Stellenbosch rejected an offer for Iqraam Rayners from Abha FC.

The Saudi club submitted a bid for Rayners just after the Premier Soccer League transfer window closed.

However, the club stood firm in their decision to rebuff the offer, citing the challenge of finding a suitable replacement.
