Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has compared Peter Shalulile to Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane.

The Namibian has struggled in front of goal in the last few months, including in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he failed to score.

The 30-year-old has scored four goals in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership. He has scored just twice since August. The striker received criticism for his performances on Saturday against Orlando Pirates, a match his team drew 1-1.

Tapelo Xoki's late penalty cancelled Marcelo Allende's 76th-minute strike. Shalulile had chances to score throughout the game but couldn't convert the chances.

The Namibian star won the Golden Boot last season and is off the pace this season, per Transfermarkt. His struggles in front of goal have coincided with Sundowns' struggles. Mokwena's side have drawn their last three matches in the league.

Mokwena compares Shalulile to Kane

Addressing his form, Mokwena recalled a quote by Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel on his striker Harry Kane.

“He said something like; ‘when the team wins and Harry Kane doesn’t score there is that level of unhappiness from Harry Kane, even though he’s happy the team has won and he congratulates and walks around with a good spirit’," via iDiski Times.

Mokwena added that the three-time DStv Premier Ship Golden Boot winner has one quality that top strikers have. The striker has scored nine goals this season.

“But that level of selfishness, knowing I have to score and contribute to the success of the team, is a quality that top strikers have, it’s something Peter has. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to score and help the team win.”

Shalulile will be looking to end his drought when the defending champions play NB La Masia in the Nedbank Cup last-32.

Shalulile on Ballon d'Or

Sports Brief earlier reported on Shalulile disclosing his Ballon d'Or aspirations.

The Namibian has scored over 80 goals for the South African giants and recently disclosed some of his targets.

"I have a lot planned. We play to become stars and make our mark in other countries. Let's be honest," he emphasised. "I just hope that one day, I'll be sitting here on holiday, saying that I played against CR7 [Cristiano Ronaldo] and that I have the Ballon d'Or trophy."
