Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments that the Saudi Pro League is better than Ligue 1 has received opposition from a former player of the French top flight league.
Since his move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese star has cultivated a habit of comparing the Gulf country's league to its European counterparts.
One of his first comparisons was claiming the Saudi league was better than Major League Soccer, just days after his long-term rival, Lionel Messi, joined the American soccer league with Inter Miami.
Per The Athletic, while receiving the top scorer award at the Golden Globe Award, Ronaldo also said he does not think the league he plays is worse than the French league because it is more competitive.

The Portuguese veteran received the annual award after scoring 54 goals in 2023, beating top European stars from the five major leagues, including Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe.
Hazard disagrees with Cristiano Ronaldo
Hazard, meanwhile, had an extensive interview on the Obi One podcast with his former Blues teammate, John Obi Mikel, where he was asked about Ronaldo’s comment.
"I don't agree with him, but that's just an opinion. If you look at the league in [Saudi] Arabia, they have big players now, but they are not big teams. In France, there are less big players but [bigger] teams.
"I’m sure if a Ligue 1 team played against a Saudi Arabian team, they would win. Maybe not easily, like people might think, but the level in France is good."
The Belgian spent five seasons in Lille’s first team before moving to London, winning the league and cup double in 2011. He won the league's Best Young Player and Player of the Year twice each.
