The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) unfolded with a breathtaking display of skill and passion.
One player who shone through among the multitude was Nigeria defender, William Troost-Ekong.
The 30-year-old featured in all seven games for the Super Eagles, scoring three goals en route to the final.
Troost-Ekong's commanding presence was instrumental as Nigeria went an impressive 490 minutes without conceding a single goal, and it was no surprise when he was honoured with the prestigious Player of the Tournament award by the competition's organisers.

However, amid the widespread acknowledgement of his brilliance, SuperSport United coach, Gavin Hunt, holds a differing view. He believes another player deserves the title of the Super Eagles' best performer at the competition.
Hunt picks Nigeria’s best player at AFCON
According to a report by OwnGoalNigeria, the 59-year-old veteran coach believes the former Watford star wasn't Nigeria's best player at the tournament - and beleives Frank Onyeka was the standout performer for the Super Eagles.
"I know many will disagree with me, but this is my opinion, and I stand by it. Onyeka, to me, was their key player leading up to the final. He dominates the midfield, driving the team forward and breaking up play. He is their best player and vital to their two-midfielder system that worked so well in the tournament."
Hunt's choice may come as a surprise, given the widespread acclaim for Troost-Ekong's performances as the standout player of the tournament.
