Cape Town City have welcomed former Leicester City midfielder Khanya Leshabela to their training grounds.

The 24-year-old has been staying fit with the Cape Town-based team since January, as confirmed by club chairman, John Comitis.

Providing an update on Leshabela's progress, Comitis spoke to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, highlighting the midfielder's need to improve his fitness level.

Comitis praised Leshabela's football intelligence, stressing that representing The Foxes, even briefly, requires considerable skill. He expressed confidence in the player's potential, noting his versatility as a winger or attacking midfielder.

"We’re working closely with him. He’s got a fantastic football brain. You can’t play for Leicester, even if it’s one game, if you aren’t good enough," Comitis said, as quoted by the South African.

Although Leshabela hails from Soshanguve, he spent much of his upbringing in the United Kingdom, where he progressed through the ranks at Leicester. Despite only one official appearance, he gained valuable experience during loan spells over two seasons before his contract expired in December last year.

In addition to Leshabela's, Cape Town City have made significant moves to strengthen their squad.

Cape Town City FC strengthening

The club extended midfielder Taahir Goedeman's contract by four years following goalkeeper Darren Keet's two-year extension. At 24 years old, Goedeman has emerged as a critical player for the team, showcasing his talent since the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

Coach Eric Tinkler praised the player's development and expressed optimism for continued growth.

“Very pleased that ‘Balla’ signed a new contract. He’s developed significantly in the past few seasons since I joined, and we’re optimistic he’ll continue to do so,” said Tinkler, as quoted on Far Post.

Goedeman's journey from the DStv Diski Challenge team to the first team underscores his impact on the midfield, with 58 appearances, five goals, and two assists.

Furthermore, the club secured the signing of promising talent Heaven Prince Julius Sereetsi from the Varsity Cup scene. Sereetsi's standout performances for NWU garnered attention, leading to his acquisition by the PSL side. Despite competition from other teams following Orbit College and Upington City's promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, the Blue and Gold Army secured his services.

Prins Tjiueza's transfer to Cape Town City hits snag

Sports Brief reported that the transfer of Prins Tjiueza to Cape Town City hit a frustrating snag for owner John Comitis.

Tjiueza was expected to bolster Eric Tinkler's attacking options in the second half of the season, but it was not to be.

Tjiueza's injury, which he picked up against Angola in their AFCON Round of 16 tie, has been deemed too severe for the club to complete the transfer.
