Manchester United could be slammed with points deduction after their fans invaded Old Trafford minutes before their crunch fixture against Liverpool.

The supporters protested against the owners of the club which led to the postponement of the encounter on Sunday, May 2.

Premier League and the Football Association have now launched an investigation into the mass protest over the weekend. The organisers have asked the Red Devils to find the cause of the chaos.

Rules guiding the Premier League reveals that points can be deducted if a club fails to ensure the safety of players and staff, as well as entry and exit from the ground according to Daily Mail.

Also, the FA can also slam them with fines among other punishments which include ground closures and suspension from competitions. And it can demand the club responsible for any postponement compensates the other side for any costs.

Rule 14 in the Premier League Handbook states that the home club must make sure that the players and match officials can enter and leave the stadium safely and that there is safe environment for a game. A statement from Greater Manchester Police said:

"Following discussion with The Premier League, Trafford Council, and the clubs, a joint decision was made to postpone the match for safety reasons."

The Premier League has the power to investigate the breach of any rule and can arrange a commission of inquiry. The commission's sanctions include imposing a fine or a points deduction.

The Red Devils were scheduled to host their arch-rivals from the Merseyside on Sunday, May 2, for a crunch Premier League meeting.

However, the tie failed to hold as earlier planned over safety grounds as United supporters staged a protest against the club's ownership by The Glazers family.
