  • Sphephelo Sithole could leave Portuguese side Tondela at the end of the season
  • The Bafana player's agent Manuel Tomas says the player has high career ambition
  • The midfielder was part of Hugo Broos' South Africa squad at AFCON 2023

South Africa midfielder Sphephelo Sithole could depart from CD Tondela FC at the end of the current season.

His agent Manuel Tomas, said that despite Sithole's contract with the Portuguese side extending until the end of the 2024-25 season, the 24-year-old midfielder is poised to seek opportunities in leagues that align more closely with his talent and aspirations.

The announcement follows the midfielder's remarkable performances during the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 (AFCON), where he played an instrumental role in Bafana Bafana's journey to securing the bronze medal, a feat not accomplished since 2000.

Throughout the tournament, Sithole showcased his versatility and prowess, particularly in crucial matches against formidable opponents like Morocco and Nigeria. His ability to contribute defensively and offensively earned him widespread recognition and attracted interest from clubs in higher-ranked leagues, including the Italian top-flight league, Serie A.

The agent stressed the challenge of negotiating a transfer fee with Tondela, citing their demand, a figure difficult to attain within the confines of Portugal's second division.

“Of course, we want to transfer him, but the club wants €3 million (R61 million), but in the second league, it is very difficult,” Tomas said, as quoted by iDiski Times.

Acknowledging Sithole's capabilities and the exposure he gained on the international stage, Tomas expressed confidence in securing a move for his client to a club competing in a top-tier league. The agent hinted at a proposal from a Serie A club, although he refrained from disclosing specifics, underscoring the sensitivity of ongoing negotiations.

As reported by Goal, the player's trajectory in European football began with Belenenses in the Portuguese top flight from 2019 to 2023 before joining Tondela. His transition to the second division proved fruitful, with notable contributions, including two goals and two assists in 12 league appearances.

The midfielder's journey with Bafana commenced in 2022, where he made his international debut against Morocco during the AFCON qualifiers. Since then, Sithole has amassed 16 caps for the national team, solidifying his position as a key figure in the squad's midfield.

Sithole speaks on setbacks in securing European move

Sports Brief previously reported that Sithole disclosed the hurdles he faced in securing a European move.

His aspirations for a European move earlier were thwarted, despite interest from the Bundesliga and the Ligue 1.

Sithole made his professional debut with Belenenses SAD in the Primeira Liga against Braga on July 15, 2020.
