  • Wayne Rooney is considering a sensational career switch to boxing
  • The Manchester United legend is in talks to appear in the next Misfits Boxing event
  • He was recently sacked as Birmingham boss in early January

Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney, is poised to make a return to sport, but it’s not football.

The 38-year-old has been tipped to make a sensational career switch to boxing, barely weeks after he was dismissed as Birmingham manager.

Instead of seeking another managerial role, it seems Rooney is ready to rumble, as a report on The Mirror claims he has been holding talks with Misfits Boxing, a promotion run by famous Youtuber KSI.

Discussions are reportedly at an early stage, and Rooney is yet to agree any terms, although in December 2022, Misfits founder KSI, whose real name is Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji, confirmed the former England striker had challenged him to a fight.

The Misfits event has been spearheaded by several big names in the past, including Logan Paul and brother Jake Paul. Tyson Furry’s half-brother Tomy Fury also got involved last year.

It is however worth noting that Rooney would not be entering professional boxing, since Misfits does not fall under British Boxing Board of Control.

Rooney’s love for boxing

It would come as no surprise to see Rooney in the boxing ring as the Manchester United record goal scorer has openly showed interest in the sport even during his playing days.

The first huge hint of Rooney’s love for boxing was in 2007 when he walked out with Ricky Hatton for his fight with Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas, USA.

Eight years later, in 2015, a video of Rooney sparring with his then-teammate Phil Bardsley went viral on social media, showing the latter knocking out his counterpart. Rooney made light of the video using a knockout celebration after scoring in Manchester United’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.

According to GOAL.com, Rooney also messaged sports promoted Eddie Hearn requesting a celebrity bout.

Reports also claim Rooney was a member of an amateur boxing club in his hometown in Liverpool.

Wayne Rooney sacked 83 days into Birmingham job

Sports Brief previously reported on the sudden but not shocking dismissal of Wayne Rooney from his role as manager of Championship side Birmingham.

The former Manchester United forward found the club in sixth position in the league and within that short run of fifteen games he went on to lose nine, resulting in the club flirting with the bottom.
