  • The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations ended in a disappointing defeat for the Nigerians
  • Fans of the Super Eagles have scapegoated a few players, including Alex Iwobi
  • A Super Eagles forward has warned critics following the ordeal of the midfielder

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final loss against Ivory Coast left many Super Eagles fans feeling deeply disappointed.

The clash, which many had largely predicted to be won by Jose Peseiro’s men, would see them lose, courtesy of a second-half resurgence spurred by midfielder, Franck Kessie, and forward, Sebastien Haller.

The Super Eagles could do little to respond to the goals scored by the Ivorians and were eventually condemned to defeat.

In the aftermath of the match, many Nigerian fans have struggled to accept the loss and resorted to blaming the players for the outcome.

Most significantly, midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has been a target for online abuse, and the Fulham star subsequently resolved to clear out his Instagram account.

Nonetheless, following these distressing events, one Super Eagles forward has issued a warning to critics of Nigerian players.

Super Eagles forward sends fans warning

Nigeria and Real Sociedad forward, Sadiq Umar, has shared his perspective on the aftermath of the Super Eagles' AFCON defeat, also issuing a stern warning to Nigerian team supporters.

In a statement on Instagram, the 27-year-old highlighted that despite not being part of the team in the final, he faced online abuse from Super Eagles fans. He firmly stated his readiness to respond to any trolls or online bullies with a fitting reply, similar to what Alex Iwobi experienced.

Umar emphasised the need for fans to show more respect, stating that criticising players who gave their best for the country is neither fair nor appropriate.

The words of Sadiq appear to resonate with a host of stakeholders representing the Super Eagles.

However, it remains to be seen if these fans will heed the forward's warning and change their behaviour.

Super Eagles star provides update on his future

Sports Brief in another report stated that Super Eagles of Nigeria defender, Kenneth Omeruo, has provided an update regarding his immediate future with the national team.

The 30-year-old was among the long list of players rumoured to be retiring following the disappointing final defeat against Ivory Coast.

The Kasimpasa star has, however, cleared the air on his future with the Super Eagles going forward.
