  • The Super Eagles suffered a distasteful defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations against Ivory Coast
  • Talks in the media about the potential of players retiring from the team have garnered strength
  • A veteran of the Nigerian team has provided an update on his future amid the growing talks

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) left many players of Nigeria’s Super Eagles feeling bitter after a defeat against Ivory Coast.

The three-time Cup of Nations winners had high hopes of securing their elusive fourth title. However, second-half goals from midfielder, Franck Kessie, and forward, Sebastien Haller, would cancel out William Troost-Ekong’s opener to secure the title for Les Elephants.

The aftermath of the disappointing defeat sparked a barrage of rumours linking many players of the Nigerian team with the potential of retirement.

Nonetheless, amid these growing rumours, a Super Eagles veteran has provided an update regarding his future with the team.

Super Eagles veteran on retirement

In a statement to the media, as reported by All Nigerian Soccer, veteran defender, Kenneth Omeruo, addressed speculation about his future following the Nigerian team's return from the AFCON.

The 2013 Cup of Nations winner responded to questions about his plans, saying:

"My focus now is on returning, maintaining regular play for my club, and being ready if called upon."

Omeruo's words seem aimed at dispelling rumours about his future with the Super Eagles.

The 30-year-old, who has progressed from Nigeria's youth teams, has represented his country four times at the Cup of Nations and twice at the FIFA World Cup.

Omeruo also reflected on the defeat against Ivory Coast, acknowledging the pain of losing in the final. However, he praised the Super Eagles' effort, noting that despite their best charge, they fell short against the Ivorians.

"It was quite painful because we put in a lot of effort from the beginning to reach the final, so the defeat was hard to accept. However, the players worked tirelessly and gave their all throughout the tournament without complaint.
"These things happen; it's part of football. We need to learn from this experience, build on it, and shift our focus to the next challenge."

Peter Rufai hails Nwabali

Sports Brief in another report stated that former Nigeria goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has praised Stanley Nwabali for his heroics at the AFCON.

The 60-year-old lauded the Chippa United shot-stopper for his composure and overall display at the tournament.

Nwabali set a new record for clean sheets by any Nigerian goalkeeper at the AFCON, going over 490 minutes without conceding.
