  • Ivory Coast players dominated the 2023 AFCON Team of the Tournament
  • The Ivorians won the continental trophy for the third time in their history
  • The Elephants defeated the Super Eagles 2-1 in the AFCON's final match

Victor Osimhen is one of the biggest omissions from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Team of the Tournament, as Ivory Coast and Nigeria players dominated the list.

The Elephants were crowned champions of Africa for the third time after they defeated the Super Eagles 2-1 in the final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan, on February 11.

Sebastien Haller scored the winning goal for the hosts after Franck Kessie had cancelled out William Troost-Ekong’s opener for the Super Eagles, in a remarkable turnaround for Ivory Coast in the tournament.

South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the other teams also represented in the team of the tournament following their incredible run to the semi-finals of the four-week competition.

Sports Brief, alongside ESPN, has compiled a Team of the Tournament following the conclusion of Africa’s biggest football competition in Ivory Coast.

Taribo slams Nigeria coaching crew

Meanwhile, Super Eagles legend, Taribo West, has blamed Jose Peseiro and his coaching crew for Nigeria’s defeat to Ivory Coast in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, Complete Sports reports.

He stated the technical crew should have come up with a different strategy against the Elephants in the final because they used the same tactics against their opponents during the group phase.

Despite taking the lead early in the last round through captain, Troost-Ekong, Ivory Coast continued their remarkable journey to their third AFCON title thanks to goals from Kessie and Haller.

Peseiro speaks on Nigeria future

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Super Eagles coach, Peseiro has indicated he will 'rest' following the end of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led Nigeria to the silver medal.

The 63-year-old stated that he would resume negotiations with the Nigerian Football Federation after a deserved break, with his contract as national coach set to conclude this month.
