  • Nigeria suffered a disappointing end to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign
  • Ivory Coast’s Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller doomed the Super Eagles to defeat
  • Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, has provided an update on his future after the AFCON

Nigeria’s fairytale run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) ended in an utterly heartbreaking defeat against the host nation, Ivory Coast.

Despite being tipped as favourites, the three-time AFCON champions couldn't secure victory. Goals from midfielder, Franck Kessie, and forward, Sebastien Haller, secured the win for Emerse Fae's team.

The aftermath of this loss has sparked discussions about the future of manager, Jose Peseiro.

The Portuguese coach, who surprised many with his team's performance at the AFCON, had initially divided opinions leading up to the competition.

However, after the team's display, many are now calling for him to stay on, especially since his contract expires at the end of March.

Amid the speculation about his future, coach Peseiro has provided an update on his future with the Super Eagles.

Peseiro on his Super Eagles future

During an interview with media outlet, TVC Nigeria, the former Venezuela manager addressed the ongoing discussion about his future.

When asked about continuing as Nigeria's manager, the 63-year-old responded:

"My contract ends at the end of this month. I am going to take some rest, and I am in discussions with the NFF to determine my future. Right now, I need to rest as I am very tired. We are all tired, but we are discussing my future together."

Peseiro's comments seem intended to calm the speculation and rumours surrounding his tenure with the Super Eagles.

Nonetheless, it is worth noting that since his appointment as manager in May 2022, he has achieved 11 wins, four draws, and seven losses in 22 games.

Gernot Rohr on Nigeria’s AFCON loss

Sports Brief also reported on former coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr explaining Nigeria's AFCON loss in the final against host nation, Ivory Coast.

He touched on the starting lineup of coach Peseiro, noting that the absence of a particular player caused the lacklustre performance by the West Africans.

The German tactician, however, lauded the team for their impeccable display at AFCON in general and praised the team for the growth it has made.
