  • Xabi Alonso is unlikely to be Bayer Leverkusen’s manager next season
  • He has alerted top European clubs with his work at the German club
  • Three of the clubs he played for are also in the mix for his services

Xabi Alonso is arguably the most sought-after manager in the world due to his exploits at Bayer Leverkusen, which could see him end Bayern Munich’s firm hold on the Bundesliga title.

He masterminded a tactical 3-0 win over the current champions at the weekend, which saw his team go five points clear at the top of the table with 13 games to go in the current season.

Sports Brief looks at the six clubs he could go to next season if he leaves Leverkusen, in no particular order.

Xabi Alonso's potential clubs

1. Bayern Munich

The Bavarian giants are notorious for picking the best from other German clubs. Per Bild, they are reportedly eyeing Alonso as the perfect replacement for Thomas Tuchel, who will likely leave the club at the end of the season. The former Spain midfielder played three seasons at Bayern and retired after leaving the club in 2017.

2. Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp is confirmed to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. The club have claimed they are not actively finding a replacement yet but would undoubtedly have a preference list. Alonso, who played five seasons at Anfield, is reportedly top of the list to replace the German.

3. Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino could be shown the exit door at Chelsea by the end of the season. Per Sports Zone, co-owner, Behdad Eghbali, wanted the 2005 UEFA Champions League winner to replace the Argentine immediately after two consecutive losses to Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

4. Barcelona

Barcelona are in active search for a new manager after Xavi Hernandez announced he will leave the club at the end of the season. Several names have been linked, one of which is the 2010 World Cup winner.

5. Real Madrid

There were reports that Xabi would be Real Madrid’s manager next season, but the news of Carlo Ancelotti extending his contract until 2026 quenched such notions. The dream is certainly not over, and Los Blancos could convince their former player to remain in Germany till there is an opening at the club.

6. Manchester City

Spanish football expert, Guillem Balague, has added Manchester City to the list of clubs the 42-year-old could join. He quoted his agent on the Football News Show, who he claimed listed the clubs his client could manage next if he does well at Leverkusen. Pep Guardiola has a contract to 2025 at the English champions.

When Mourinho predicted Alonso’s future

Sports Brief previously reported on when Jose Mourinho predicted Alonso’s future as a manager while the midfielder was still in his active playing days.

The Special One cited the influence of top managers the former Liverpool star played under as a big factor, such as Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.
