  • Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omeruo are on the cusp of making history
  • The Super Eagles captains stand a chance to win a second AFCON title
  • Nigeria will tackle Ivory Coast in the AFCON final on Sunday

Super Eagles captains, Ahmed Musa and Kenneth Omeruo, are on the verge of becoming the first Nigerians to win two Africa Cup of Nations titles should Nigeria emerge champions.

Nigeria booked their spot for the 2023 AFCON final after defeating South Africa 4-2 via penalty shootouts and will face host nation Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday, February 11.

According to the Daily Post, Musa and Omeruo were members of the Super Eagles team that won the prestigious title in 2013 when Stephen Keshi led Nigeria to the title over a decade ago.

Both players have played minimal roles at this year’s competition in Ivory Coast but have been instrumental in their leadership skills that guided the Super Eagles to the final.

With 109 appearances for the Super Eagles, Musa is Nigeria's most capped player, while Omeruo has five appearances in this year's AFCON, four of which have been as substitutes.

Omeruo anticipates tough AFCON final

Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo expects a tough battle in Sunday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final against the Ivory Coast, Soccernet reports.

The veteran defender acknowledges the significance of the game for both countries, with Nigeria having earlier secured a 1-0 victory against the hosts in the group stage.

Omeruo is expecting a strong response from the Elephants as they will be seeking revenge against the Super Eagles as both teams battle it out for the trophy at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.

Nigeria pledge to win AFCON

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that to honour the supporters who sadly passed away while watching their semifinal matchup against South Africa, the Super Eagles players have pledged to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

During the team's meeting on Thursday, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa made this pledge as the group conducted a minute of silence in memory of the fallen supporters.

On Sunday, February 11, Nigeria's Super Eagles will take on the hosts Ivory Coast in the final, hoping to capture their fourth AFCON trophy following victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
