  • The champions are favoured by stats to topple the league leaders

Bayer Leverkusen poses a real threat to ending Bayern Munich’s dominance in the German Bundesliga, which has seen them win 11 consecutive league titles.

After 20 games, Leverkusen are top of the table with 52 points and have yet to taste defeat this season. They are two points clear of Bayern Munich, who have lost two games this season.

Sports Brief looks at five exciting stats as Germany’s best teams this year clash, as first analysed by FC Bayern.

Leverkusen vs Bayern’s interesting stats

1. Best defence vs best attack

The Bavarians have the best attack this season with 59 goals, while their hosts on Saturday have the best defence with 10 clean sheets and 14 goals conceded. The away team's defensive record is alright too, with 19 goals conceded and nine clean sheets, while the home team have scored 52 goals.

Per Opta Franz, both teams have the best goals per game average in Europe’s top five leagues, with Thomas Tuchel’s men boasting 2.95 and Xabi Alonso’s men having 2.6.

2. Bayern edge H2H record

The encounter tomorrow will be the 90th between the two sides. Bayern have won a remarkable 52, while Bayer have won 19 and 18 of those 89 games have ended in a draw. It remains to be seen which side of the coin will face up tomorrow or whether the knife will balance on the edge.

3. Goretzka will be crucial

German midfielder Leon Goretzka certainly loves a game against tomorrow’s opponent. He has faced them 17 times in his career. He has scored five goals and provided six assists, including in last season's 2-2 draw.

4. Leverkusen eye a record

Four teams have remained undefeated in their first 20 league games – Bayern Munich twice (1988/89 and 2013/14) and Bayer Leverkusen (2009/10 and 2023/24). If Alonso’s men avoid defeat tomorrow, they'll extend their unbeaten start to 21 games.

5. League leaders vs runners-ups

The Reds have faced league leaders six times and lost once, winning three and drawing two. The Black and Reds have never beaten second-place teams when they are at the top of the table, losing three times to Bayern and once to Hamburger SV.

Sports Brief reported on Alonso denying links to replace Jose Mourinho at Roma after the Portuguese manager was sacked by the Italian club last month.

The former midfielder has been linked to many jobs in Europe, including former clubs Liverpool, Real Madrid, and even Bayern Munich, should Tuchel leave in the summer.
