  • Gift Orban recently completed a transfer to Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyon
  • The 21-year-old was excluded from the Super Eagles' final AFCON squad
  • The fast-footed forward opened his goal account with a filthy finish against Lille

Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward, Gift Orban, has continued his stellar goalscoring form following his transfer to French Ligue 1 club, Olympique Lyon.

The 21-year-old who shined at Belgian First Division A club, K.A.A. Gent throughout 2023, completed a winter switch to Lyon aimed at rejuvenating their season, and the Nigerian is firmly on track to assist them in achieving precisely that.

The ₤13 million forward, who featured for the third time for Pierr Sage’s team, treated the fans at Groupama Stadium to a glimpse of what they would be enjoying for the foreseeable future.

The Nigerian, who notched up 32 goals in 48 appearances with Gent, opened his goalscoring account for Lyon with a sensational chip over onrushing Lille goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier.

Latching on to a beautiful pass from midfielder Rayan Cherki, as captured by EuroFoot, Orban completed a mazy run from about 40 yards out before cheekily lobbing the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

The former Stabæk of Norway forward, was brought in to add more dynamism to Lyon’s attack led by veteran Alexandre Lacazette, and this he was done with some aplomb. Orban’s goal ensured Lyon booked a slot in the quarter-final of the Coupe de France, against Strasbourg.

Orban's brilliance ignited a frenzy on social media, with fans quick to laud his exceptional talent and skill.

Fans’ reaction to Orban’s goal

@Yemmie_, in response to the finish, remarked:

"He's bound to net plenty of goals at Lyon. Delighted, he notched his first goal 🇳🇬"

@KeneCFC, infatuated by what he witnessed, shared:

"Lyon has truly unearthed a gem!!"

@EmperorKaash, taking a subtle jab at Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, quipped:

"No offence or shade, but Rashford would've missed this goal!"

@AlamzyKhalifa chimed in with:

"We're on our way to conquering the world."

Orban complete Lyon transfer

In an earlier report, Sports Brief stated that Nigerian forward, Gift Orban, was joining Lyon from K.A.A. Gent.

The forward's release clause, reported to be around ₤13 million, was triggered by the Ligue 1 giant.

Orban joins the long list of new arrivals at the club, including Said Benrahma, Nemanja Matic, and Orel Mangala.
