Chelsea's hopes of returning to winning ways were dashed on Sunday evening, January 3, after they suffered a 3-1 defeat in the hands of Man City at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues were looking to capitalise on City's depleted squad after a COVID-19 crisis hit their camp for a chance to kick off the new year on an impressive note.

However, it was the visitors who reigned supreme at the Bridge, with Pep Guardiola's men proving too hot to handle.

Despite a shaky start from debutant Zack Steffen who was drafted in goal in place of Ederson, City quickly settled into the match to take control in the early minutes of the tie.

Their efforts were nearly rewarded in the 16th minute through Kevin de Bruyne, only for the Belgian to fluff the chance.

However, they went on to break the deadlock two minutes later via Ilkay Gundogan, who pirouetted gracefully into the far corner to break the deadlock.

Phil Foden doubled the advantage three minutes, clipping a first-time shot past Edouard Mendy after he was fed the ball by De Bruyne who later made it 3-0 in the 34th minute.

Rodri had a chance to put the game to bed shortly after the break but he was denied by Mendy who pushed the shot over the bar.

Frank Lampard was forced into a tactical change in the 64th minute, replacing Hakim Ziyech and N'Golo Kante with Billy Gilmore and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Hudson-Odoi had a near-instant impact, scoring the home side's consolation in the dying minutes as the tie ended 3-1.

The result leaves Chelsea occupying eighth place with 26 points, with City climbing up the ladder to fifth with 29 points.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League giants Chelsea are close to agreeing a mega-million deal with Spanish giants Atletico Madrid over the transfer of defender Marcos Alonso.

The Spaniard has found himself cast aside at Chelsea and on the offloading pile after he infuriated Lampard with some questionable and disrespectful behaviour during the draw against West Brom.

Alonso has not played at all since then despite the Blues missing Ben Chilwell at times, the attack-minded Spaniard is still being ignored by Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.
