South Africa have congratulated Nigeria despite failing to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final after losing to the Super Eagles in the semi-final.

Bafana Bafana made the last four after defeating Cape Verde on penalties in the quarter-final but fell to the same consequences when they faced the Super Eagles.

The semi-final tie ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of play, but two spot-kicks save from Stanley Nwabali gave Nigeria the win over South Africa on Wednesday (February 7).

Teboho Mokoena and Evidence Makgopa were the two South African players who lost their penalty kicks.

After the game, Bafana Bafana took to their official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) to send a congratulatory message to the Super Eagles after booking a place in the competition's final.

"Well done to Nigeria for making it to the final of AFCON 2023. South Africa, Thank you so much for your unwavering support for @BafanaBafana throughout this tournament."

The Super Eagles will face the host nation, Ivory Coast, in the final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium on Sunday, February 11.

South Africa, on the other hand, will have another opportunity to finish the tournament with a medal as they face the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the third place on Saturday, February 10, according to a report by Soccerway.

Broos urged to stay despite Nigeria's loss

Sports Brief earlier reported on Hugo Broos being urged to stay on as South Africa's Bafana Bafana manager despite the AFCON 2023 semi-final loss to the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Grant Kekana has persuaded the former Cameroon national team coach not to quit Bafana Bafana just yet but to help them achieve a greater goal.
