Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has received threats not to return to South Africa by angry supporters after playing a key role in Bafana Bafana’s exit at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside, who is presently based in South Africa, disclosed the news in an interview with Channels Television in the aftermath of the semi-final clash.

Chippa United had thrown their support to Nwabali and the Super Eagles before the game against South Africa, a move that sparked outrage among some angry supporters of Bafana Bafana, GOAL reports.

Nigeria will be aiming to win her fourth AFCON title when they tackle hosts Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday, February 11, and Nwabali will hope to play a key role for the Super Eagles again.

Nwabali set to leave Chippa United

Meanwhile, Stanley Nwabali’s agent, Mohammed Lawal, has hinted at a big move for the Super Eagles goalkeeper following his impressive display at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Daily Post reports.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is in the running for the goalkeeper of the tournament award after conceding just twice in six matches for Nigeria in their run to the final.

Nwabali currently plays for South African club Chippa United, but his agent has now confirmed the goalkeeper has received offers from France and Saudi Arabia after his display at the AFCON attracted new suitors.

Nigerians celebrate at Nwabali’s home

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Stanley Nwabali is the darling of Nigerian supporters after helping the Super Eagles qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Hundreds of supporters were spotted trooping to Nwabili's father's house after his penalty heroics against the South African national team in Nigeria’s semi-final victory.

The goalkeeper has kept four clean sheets so far in the tournament and has conceded just twice in six games for the Super Eagles in their run to the final.
