  • Napoli have posted Victor Osimhen for the first time during AFCON
  • The Italian club congratulated their striker for reaching the final
  • Nigeria beat South Africa on penalties in the semis to book their place

Victor Osimhen and Nigeria are headed to their first Africa Cup of Nations final since 2013 after beating South Africa on penalties in the semi-final.

Napoli have congratulated Osimhen for the first time since the tournament started. Nigeria will play Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday.

The 2022/23 Serie A top scorer has scored once at the 2023 AFCON but has contributed significantly to the Super Eagles' wins at the tournament.

Against South Africa, Osimhen directly contributed to Nigeria's goal. He was fouled in the box by Mothobi Mvala in the second half.

Captain William Troost-Ekong cooly converted the spot kick to give the three-time champions the lead. Osimhen thought he had sealed the victory for Nigeria late in the game, but Bafana Bafana were awarded a penalty from a previous action.

Osimhen now has the chance to end Nigeria's AFCON title drought. The last time the Super Eagles lifted the title was in 2013.

Napoli celebrate Osimhen

Shortly after Nigeria won the nerve-racking penalty shootout, Napoli posted a Tweet on X to congratulate their best player for reaching the AFCON final. Jose Peseiro's side won 4-2 on penalties after extra-time.

Napoli and Osimhen's relationship is reportedly not in a great place. Last year, the Italian champions posted a controversial video on TikTok which appeared to mock their player, per the Guardian.

Osimhen responded by removing all images of himself in a Napoli shirt from his social media accounts. Last season, the striker helped Napoli win their first league title in 33 years. In December, he signed a new contract until 2026.

He was named African Footballer of the Year last year for his achievements.

Iwobi consoles Osimhen

Sports Brief earlier reported on Alex Iwobi consoling Osimhen after their Round of 16 victory over Cameroon.

CAF filmed the striker heading to the dressing room after celebrating wildly with the fans. Iwobi embraced his teammates, who was brought to tears.

Despite scoring one goal for Nigeria in Ivory Coast, he has contributed nearly all of the Super Eagles' goals.
